Plácido Domingo

Plácido Domingo is a Spanish tenor and conductor best known for his powerful and versatile voice.Known as “the King of Opera,” Jose  Plácido Domingo is one of the most famous tenors of all time. . Born on January 21, 1941, in Madrid, Spain, Plácido Domingo grew up in a musical family. After moving to Mexico City at 18, Domingo landed a bit part in a National Opera production and the rest is, as they say, history. In the mid-1960s, Domingo made his New York debut with the New York City Opera and this is what really kick started his career. Before long, Domingo was also taking the stage at the Metropolitan Opera and at other leading opera houses around the world. In 1990, he sang alongside Luciano Pavarotti and José Carreras for the first time. The recording of that concert proved to be a big hit and earned the trio a Grammy Award for best classical vocal performance and the “three tenors” as an opera phenomena were born.

Music has been at the heart of Italian culture since the Romans refined Greek musical drama and opera is at the very core of this!

After the Colosseum in Rome and the amphitheatre in Capua, the Roman arena in Verona is the third largest Roman amphitheatre. With its gigantic dimensions of 140 metres in length and 110 metres in width it dominates the Piazza Brà from the north. When it was first built by the Romans, in the 1st century AD by the Flavian  emperors, this incredible amphitheatre was on the outskirts of  Verona, actually outside the city walls. It is still in use today and is internationally famous for the large-scale opera performances given there. It is one of the best preserved ancient structures of its kind. In ancient times, nearly 30,000 people was the housing capacity of the Arena.  The Arena has always served the purpose of staging spectacular events… think gladiators in it’s initial incarnation, Medieval jousting and a variety of tournaments during the eighteenth century. In 1913, the Arena was finally discovered for what it has become known for today, as the first true and most important open-air opera theatre in the world.

Arena di Verona still exudes that overwhelming air of spectacle and it has become the very symbol of the city. It is synonymous with world class stylish events. One thing that the Arena is famous for is it’s yearly festival. This has been occurring for over 100 years, every summer in the Roman amphitheatre, the opera productions all remain fabulous and awe inspiring.

.

On 1st August 2019  the great Plácido Domingo will sing, performing for the first time at the Arena Di Verona  the most important of Verdi’s great paternal characters in Verdi’s La Traviata : Giorgio Germont, the father of Alfredo and, metaphorically, of Violetta, the fulcrum of the protagonist’s downfall and redemption. This is a brand new production for 2019 and promises to be outstanding!

On 2nd August 2019, Domingo will once again take to the conductor’s podium for  Bizet’s Carmen, an opera he has performed many times as a tenor under the baton of the most eminent conductors, such as Kleiber, Solti, Abbado, Prêtre and Maazel, and which he has directed on a few exceptional occasions. The production will be that which inaugurated the 2018 Festival, by Hugo de Ana.
