The subject of this week’s blog is one of the largest classical music venues in Europe. Baden Baden Festspielhaus  is one of the most renowned opera houses in the world, the finest singers in the world have performed here over the last 100 years. The venue is a beautiful building in it’s own right and concerts here are extremely sought after. The  Easter, Whitsun and Summer festivals are particularly splendid and star studded in 2020!

Brief History

Located at the foothills of the Black Forest in the south-west of Germany, BadenBaden’s history dates back to its founding by the Romans. Known as the “Summer Capital of Europe”, BadenBaden  ( named after Count Baden) combines Mediterranean flair with the elegance of the Belle Epoque and the cosmopolitanism of a major city.  BadenBaden today is famous worldwide as a spa town with a cultural tradition and a top-class reputation for healthcare. Glittering festivals and unrivalled elegance make it a byword for exclusivity, elegance and luxury living. BadenBaden excels in everything it does, whether it is cures or culture.

The “Festspielhaus”, Europe’s second largest opera house and concert hall, is a cultural treat. It is famed for its unique acoustics and the top events that it hosts all year round, with the brightest stars of the classical music world, who bring out something new in even the best-known works. The opera hall, which seats 2,500 people, was originally made from the tracks from a railway station in 1904. This neo-classical structure has been extensively restored, and is now the entrance to the “Festspielhaus”. The Viennese architect, Wilhelm Holzbauer, redesigned the stage area in the mid-90’s to give a very bright foyer, and the ideal values for the acoustics of the hall were calculated by the renowned Munich physicist, Karlheinz Müller. The impressive stage area is state-of-the-art, and it is a prized venue for opera and ballet.

The Festspielhaus BadenBaden season begins in September and runs until late July of the following year. Festival phases are opened by premieres of newly staged operas. Currently this takes place at the Easter Festival featuring the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (which took place in Salzburg from 1967 to 2012), at the Whitsun Festival and at the Summer Festival.  We are listing the three festivals programmes  with a focus on the world famous conductors, in this blog but there are many more amazing performances throughout the year which merit a separate blog.
