The subject of this week’s blog is an exceptional virtuoso with an immaculate technique,  who is unsurpassed on the operatic stage and as one of the great voices of the 21st century!

The incredible Peruvian Juan Diego Flórez is one of the best light tenors in the world right now, possessing an extraordinary vocal quality and an incredible ability for the colaratura . He is extremely popular playing in comic operas owing to his ability to appear detached whilst expressive both in vocal tone and dramatic gesture. He is perfect for the operas of or the operas of Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini to name but a few.

Born on 13 January 1973 in Lima, Peru, Juan Diego Flórez studied popular music before accidentally turning to opera.  His father was a Peruvian folk musician. Flórez‘ capacities and his voice opened the doors of the Conservatorio Nacional of Musica de Lima in 1990, then those of the Coro Nacional de Lima. From 1993 to 1996, he studied at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia.

At the age of 23 in 1996, he made his debut at the Rossini Opera Festival, performing the composer’s main role as Matilde di Shabran. The tenor followed the tour of prestigious venues: Teatro alla Scala from Milan in Gideon’s Armida in 1996, Royal Opera House in London in a Donizetti opera, Otto Mesi Due Ore , Wiener Staatsoper in 1999, New Metropolitan Opera York in 2002. This was just the beginning of a most illustrious career that has lead to Flórez becoming one of the most desired and demanded voices by all of the main opera houses in the world.

Juan Diego has received a number of awards, including the Rossini d’Oro, the Abbiati Prize given by the Italian Association of Music Critics, the Tiberini d’Oro, the ISO de Oro, the Opera Award and the Aureliano Pertile, Bellini, Francesco Tamagno and Plácido Domingo Awards.In addition to this, alongside the Venezuelan conductor, Gustavo Dudamel, he has established the Symphony For Peru which promotes the classical education an well being of children and young people on Peru. Guillaume Tell by Rossini

When, in 1829, Guillaume Tell had its première, at the Paris Opéra, the composer was thirty-seven; he had written some forty operas and attained wealth and fame – this was his final opera. This political yet romantic opera is a work of genius! Flórez stars as Arnold. Conducted by Michele Mariotti.
